Recently I started gaining weight and I was wondering why. I started seeing a bunch of youtube videos talking about how following a high-carb diet can cause insulin spikes and lead to weight gain - or worse insulin resistance or diabetes. We have a family history of diabetes so I started to wonder if my high-carb vegan lifestyle could possibly be putting my health in danger and actually leading me to put on weight. It can be scary when you don't know what's going on with your own body.
I first heard about the Nutrisense Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) when I was watching a video on insulin resistance and how it can make you also become weight loss resistant. I thought "oh my gosh, I bet that is what is going on with me." Shortly after, an ad popped up on YouTube for Nutrisense a continuous glucose monitor that can help you determine how your body is processing glucose.
I was curious about the product and did some more research. I found out that Nutrisense had created a continuous glucose monitoring device (CGM) that would be able to collect real-time data from my body, which could give me insight into my blood sugar levels after eating. This was exactly what I needed to get an accurate understanding of how my diet and lifestyle were affecting my body. I decided to give the Nutrisense CGM a try and see if it could help me get to the bottom of why I was having trouble with my weight.

I decided to go with the one month option to see what information I would learn. For me, one month of wearing the sensor was enough to give me the information I needed.

First Impressions
I was impressed with the packaging of the Nutrisense CGM. It came with two 14 day sensors. The sensors were nicely packaged into two separate boxes and all of the necessary items for each 14-day sensor were included. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. The sensors were medically sealed upon arrival.
I was a little scared to insert the CGM into my arm. I wasn't sure what to expect, but the instructions were clear and it was easy to follow. It only took a few minutes to get it inserted and I was ready to start tracking my blood sugar levels. To my surprise, it didn't hurt at all to insert.
The most difficult thing for me was figuring out how to scan the CGM with my phone. I read the instructions and then had to google online how to scan with iPhone. I was getting hit or miss results at first but then luckily someone else was having the same problem in the Facebook group and someone answered and showed exactly what part of the phone you are supposed to use to scan the device. After that I easily scanned the device each time.
Thoughts on Using the Nutrisense CGM
I used the Nutrisense CGM for one month before writing this review. I found the device to be accurate and reliable. I was able to monitor my blood sugar levels more accurately than ever before, which helped me make better decisions about when to eat and what foods to avoid.
When I first started using it, it was fun to see how the foods that I regularly ate affected my blood sugar levels. One of the main things to watch for is to avoid having a blodd sugar spike over 140 after eating. To my surprise, I did not spike over 140 and my blood sugar returned to baseline relatively quickly.
I used it consistently and found that even though I wasn't having spikes, I was still making better choices because I did not want to see my graph spike. For example., one of my favorite snacks is pretzels. Early on, I saw that pretzels were one of my highest-spiking foods getting me close to that 140 mark (probably due to the lack of protein and fiber). Pretzels also tend to derail my weight loss efforts because I can mindlessly snack on them throughout the day. While I was wearing the CGM I pretty much stopped eating pretzels and instead switched to baby carrots because I didn't want to see the spike.

The CGM was easy to apply and did not hurt at all
The Nutrisense CGM was easy to apply and did not hurt at all. I will be honest, I don't like needles and I was a little freaked out to insert this into my arm. Also, I can't even stand to do the finger prick blood tests so I was really worried I wouldn't be able to do it or it would be painful.
It turned out I was worried about nothing. The CGM was easy to apply and did not hurt at all. Some people describe it as a pinch but I wouldn't even go that far and once it was inserted I didn't feel it at all.
SCANNING THE CGM WAS EASY
Scanning the CGM was easy with my phone--all you have to do is open up the app, hold your phone over the device, and wait for the vibration! It took me a few tries to get used to scanning in a consistent way but once I figured out how to position the phone camera over the sensor it was easy!
TIP: Turn your phone upside down and place the camera lens near the CGM
I forgot I was wearing it and only got asked by a few people what was on my arm
Once I inserted the sensor I couldn't even feel it. The only time I really thought about the sensor was when it was time for me to scan it. I was also surprised that only a couple of people even asked me about what was on my arm.
It was fun to see the real-time responses that my body had to food
One of the most fun things about using the Nutrisense CGM was seeing how my body responded to the food I ate. I could see in real-time what my blood sugar levels were doing after I ate different foods, and this helped me make better decisions about what to eat and when.
For example, I noticed that my blood sugar would spike after eating high-carb/ low-fiber snacks like pretzels, but it would stay relatively stable after eating healthier options like baby carrots. This information was really helpful in helping me make better choices about what to snack on throughout the day.
The CGM was very accurate and reliable. The sensor always gave me an accurate reading of my blood sugar levels, which helped me make better decisions about when to eat and what foods to avoid.

She helped me understand what the data meant and how my body was responding to food. She also gave me tips on how to adjust my diet to better manage my blood sugar levels.
After a couple of weeks, she gave me an analysis of what was working for me. It turned out that my blood sugar levels and reactions to food were actually really good. We then talked about what might be causing me to have trouble losing weight and she pointed out that while my diet looked good, based on my age and activity, I should really up my daily protein intake.
I was surprised to find that my blood sugar levels were actually really good. It turns out (thankfully) that my high-carb plant-based diet actually allowed my blood sugar levels to remain within a good range all day long. In fact, my dietitian said my body's glucose management is ideal. I think this is from the high levels of fiber that I eat in my diet. The high fiber allows for slow absorption and avoids quick spikes and crashes.
What was surprising was that when I go too long without eating my blood sugar goes very low. This was true, especially during the night, it would often go below 70. This made sense to me because there are times when I haven't eaten for a long time that I will get shaky and extremely hungry. These are the times that I am most likely to reach for snack food or simple carbs. This is a weakness I have had that can sidetrack my weight loss efforts. From my results, I see that it is best for me to eat snacks during the day and not go too long without food (so intermittent fasting isn't the best option for me).
This helped me keep healthier snacks with fiber on hand such as baby carrots to reach for when I start to feel low rather than going and grabbing a bag of pretzels.
