I only recommend products that I truly believe are great so you get an awesome product and I get a small commission. It's a win-win.A stationary exercise bike is an excellent alternative to a treadmill for those looking to recharge their workouts. Unlike a treadmill, which can be high-impact and hard on the joints, biking provides a low-impact workout that is easy on your body while still providing plenty of calorie burn. A stationary exercise bike also allows you to increase or decrease resistance levels as needed, making it great for all fitness levels. Plus you can mix up your workouts by doing steady pace; hill workouts; or intervals. Plus, with built-in exercise programs and LCD screens displaying important stats like heart rate and calories burned, you can easily track your progress and adjust accordingly. So if you're looking for an effective alternative to the treadmill that won't break the bank.
Stationary Bike
A regular stationary bike offers a great option for those looking to recharge their workouts and get in shape without breaking the bank. Unlike the Peloton Bike, which can be highly expensive, many stationary bikes are much more budget-friendly. Plus, with the adjustable resistance levels and varying speed settings, you can easily tailor your workout plan to match. And, you can use the Peloton App or another cycling app with an exercise bike to get the benefit of the fitness class experience. This bike on Amazon is a great bike for your home gym. It retails for a little over $200 (but is currently on sale as of this writing). It has a holder for an ipad or tablet so you can stream Peloton or other cycling classes. It has a quiet flywheel and adjustable resistance.
Peloton
The Peloton Bike is a top pick for exercise bikes due to its unique features and user-friendly design. I have a Peloton and have used it for 5-6 days a week for over 4 years! I love it because the instructors are entertaining while giving a great workout. There are a huge variety of built in exercise programs so I don't get bored and they are constantly adding new workouts. The downside is that the bike is expensive and you have to pay monthly for the app. For my Full Peloton Bike Review Click here.
Elliptical Trainer
The elliptical trainer is a great alternative to the treadmill for those looking to achieve their health and fitness goals. Unlike a treadmill, which can be hard on your joints, an elliptical trainer provides a low-impact workout that still gives you plenty of calorie burn. And with adjustable resistance levels and varying speed settings, you can tailor your routine to match your desired fitness goals. Not only is it easy on the body, but it also engages major muscles like the glutes, hamstrings, and quads as you move - giving you an all-over workout! An elliptical trainer can be used for a variety of exercises. Whether you’re looking to do an intense, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout, or just getting your heart rate up with a light jog, the elliptical is the perfect machine to make it happen. One way to get the most out of your elliptical workout is to alternate between reverse and forward movements. This will help you target different muscles, resulting in a more efficient session. This elliptical machine gets really good reviews on Amazon and costs a little over $200. The reviews do mention it has more of a stair climbing effect than true full stride elliptical.
Rowing Machine
The rowing machine is an excellent alternative to the treadmill for those looking to switch up their workout routine. Rowing is a low-impact, high-intensity exercise which engages all major muscle groups in one movement, and can burn up to 600 calories per hour. As well as providing a full-body workout, it also strengthens your core and improves your balance. Unlike the treadmill, the rowing machine requires you to use both your arms and legs for each stroke. This helps build coordination and endurance while improving your cardiovascular system. Additionally, many rowing machines come with LCD screens that track progress, making it easy to measure how far you have come on every session.Sunny Health and Fitness has a popular rowing machine that is reasonably priced (retail a little over $200).If you already know that you like rowing, the Hydrow is very popular with an LCD screen that streams rowing classes (Peloton has also recently entered the rowing field as well). Hydrow is the more expensive machine but is well built and a solid brand.
Change Up Your Treadmill Workouts
Doing the same workout routine day after day can cause burnout and make it difficult to stay motivated. It's important to switch up your workouts from time to time in order to keep things interesting, challenging, and fun. One way of doing this is by changing up your treadmill workouts. By incorporating different speeds, inclines, and intervals into your routine you can give yourself a refreshing challenge that will help you reach new fitness goals.
Incline walk
12-3-30
An incline walk on the treadmill is a great alternative to running and can provide many health benefits. Walking on an incline increases the intensity of your workout, which allows you to burn more calories in a shorter amount of time. Additionally, it engages different muscles than running does, providing an all-over body workout that targets both upper and lower body muscles. An incline walk also puts less strain on your joints than running does, making it an ideal exercise for those with joint pain or injuries. Finally, walking at an incline will help strengthen your heart as well as improve your overall cardiovascular endurance levels. The latest TikTok trend is a 30-minute workout on the treadmill set at an incline of 12 and speed of 3. This challenging yet achievable routine has gained popularity among fitness enthusiasts looking for new ways to stay in shape. The combination of incline and speed provides an intense full-body workout that burns calories quickly while also strengthening the heart, improving cardiovascular endurance, and engaging different muscles than running does. Additionally, this type of exercise puts less strain on your joints than running does, making it ideal for those with joint pain or injuries. So if you’re looking to switch up your regular treadmill routine, why not give this popular trend a try?
30-60 Second Walk
The Jeff Galloway Run/Walk/Run Method is a popular approach to running that allows runners of all levels to improve their overall fitness and endurance. This method alternates walk breaks with running, usually at an interval of 30 seconds of walking for every 1-2 minutes of running. By following this plan, runners can reduce the impact on their bodies and achieve better overall results. The method has proven effective in increasing runner's performance. In addition to improving your run time, it can also help to give you a mental boost during your workout. Taking a short 30-60 second walk between runs can add variety and make your treadmill routine more enjoyable while also providing health benefits. By taking a brief break in between intervals, you give your body time to recover so you can perform better on the next run. Additionally, walking at a slower pace can help reduce any stress or tension that may have built up during the more intense parts of your workout. It can also make your workouts feel easier. A short walk can give your mind time to reset and help keep you motivated to finish strong. And, if you are like me and not a fan of running, it gives you something to look forward to every couple of minutes.
Using a Treadmill App
My favorite treadmill app is Aaptiv. It is audio-only and the instructors give clear instructions with decent music. Some instructors will give instruction on proper running technique which I find helpful. The main thing I like is that I can filter it by time and max speed (I am not a runner so for me this is really great bc I do not like to run very fast at all). I also have used the Peloton App and I like that as well. The instructors are top quality as usual. I do find that the treadmill workouts are a little more advanced than I am so I have to adjust the speed settings (not a huge deal just a little ego blow). Sometimes I will use the outdoor running classes on the treadmill and just do an interval workout and go at my own pace. Peloton does have a better music selection than Aaptiv. If you are looking for more treadmill apps, SI has a good article listing various treadmill apps. Sled Pushes
Sled pushes are a great alternative to running on the treadmill, and offer several unique benefits that make them an ideal exercise for any fitness level. This type of workout is low-impact and can be done both indoors or outdoors, allowing you to get in a full body workout without putting excessive strain on your joints.Additionally, sled pushes provide an intense cardio workout as well as strengthening muscles in your back, chest, legs, shoulders, core and even arms. By pushing a loaded sled with resistance across different surfaces such as grass or pavement you can challenge yourself while also building strength and endurance.
Strength Training
Strength training is an important component of any fitness program, especially as you age. Strength training helps to build muscle mass and bone density, which can help prevent the onset of age-related conditions such as osteoporosis. It also increases your metabolism and helps maintain a healthy weight. Additionally, strength training can improve balance and coordination, reduce risk of injury from falls or accidents, and increase overall energy levels. For those over 40 years old who want to stay fit and active for life, strength training should be included in their regular workout routine.Unlike running, strength training is low-impact and can be done both indoors or outdoors, allowing you to get in an intense workout without putting excessive strain on your joints. Sunny Health makes a variety of fitness equipment that can be used for strength training, such as kettlebells, medicine balls, dumbbells, and resistance bands. These products are great for targeting specific muscle groups in your body and can help you increase overall strength levels. I use the Peloton Guide and I love it. I am able to play the classes on my TV and the camera shows my form on the screen next to the instructor. The guide also tracks my reps and tells me how successful I was at following the class. The Guide also recommends classes for me based on the muscles that I have been using. I love this feature because I don't have to guess at which classes would be best for me.
HIIT workout
HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts are an excellent alternative to running on the treadmill. HIIT workouts offer a range of benefits that can help you improve your physical fitness and overall health. HIIT workouts involve short periods of intense exercise followed by rest periods, allowing you to push yourself harder than with other types of exercise while also giving your body time to recover. This type of workout helps increase cardiovascular endurance, build muscle strength and tone, burn fat more efficiently, and boost metabolism. Additionally, HIIT workouts can be done both indoors or outdoors in a variety of settings which makes them accessible for all levels and abilities. HIIT workouts can be done with almost any piece of fitness equipment. My favorite way to incorporate a HIIT workout is with a jump rope. You can jump for 20 seconds then rest for 10 and repeat for eight minutes.
Ski Machine
Looking for an alternative to running on the treadmill? Ski machines are a great option for those looking to mix up their workout routine. Ski machines provide a low-impact, full body workout that can help you build strength and endurance while also burning fat more efficiently. Additionally, ski machines allow you to adjust the level of resistance so that it is suitable for all fitness levels. This makes them ideal for both beginners and experienced exercisers alike who want to challenge themselves without putting too much strain on their joints. With regular use, ski machines can help improve your cardiovascular health as well as strengthen muscles in your back, chest, legs, shoulders and core. I started researching ski machines for this article and really want to give it a try. One benefit is that they say ski machines really tone and slim legs - which is a problem area for me. They aren't that expensive either. I found this one on Amazon that I am going to try. Other people love the Aeroski workout machine which also looks really fun - unfortunately it is currently sold out.
Step Aerobics
Step Aerobics is always a fun way to mix up your workout. Step Aerobics is still one of my favorite workouts. The problem is that since it's no longer as popular most gyms don't offer Step classes. But, if you have a home gym there are several apps that you can download. The leader in the step aerobics field is Cathe. I had several of her dvds but I now see that she has an app and streaming service. I also love to use my step as part of a circuit workout. It is great as a bench for chest presses or to do a HIIT routine with lunges off the back or knee ups to get my heart pumping. It is really a versatile piece of equipment.
Jump Rope
Jump rope is a great alternative to running on the treadmill and provides a low-impact, full body workout. Jumping rope helps build strength and endurance while also burning fat more efficiently. It can be done in any setting and with minimal equipment, making it accessible for all levels of fitness. Additionally, jump roping can help improve cardiovascular health as well as strengthen muscles in your back, chest, legs, shoulders and core. With regular use of a jump rope you will notice an increase in overall strength levels and improved physical fitness.Jump Rope is a great exercise to include in a High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout. A HIIT workout with jump rope allows you to push yourself hard while also giving your body time to recover. Jump roping can help improve your cardiovascular health, build muscle strength and tone, burn fat more efficiently, and boost metabolism. It also allows you to adjust the level of difficulty by increasing or decreasing the speed and intensity of your jump rope movements. If you've been avoiding jump rope because it makes you pee - then you will want to check out this article about three products you will want to know about!
Bodyweight Exercises
Bodyweight exercises are a great alternative to running on the treadmill for those looking to mix up their workout routine. These types of exercises require no equipment and can be done anywhere, making them accessible for all levels and abilities. Bodyweight exercises also provide a low-impact, full body workout that can help you build strength and endurance while also burning fat more efficiently. Additionally, they allow you to adjust the level of difficulty so that it is suitable for all fitness levels. Regular use of body weight exercises will help improve your cardiovascular health as well as strengthen muscles in your back, chest, legs, shoulders and core.Examples of these exercises include squats, lunges, mountain climbers, burpees, push ups, planks, and jumping jacks. Squats strengthen the quads and glutes while improving balance and stability. Lunges target the quads and glutes while also engaging the core muscles. Mountain climbers increase the heart rate and engage all of the major muscle groups while burpees strengthen the legs, arms and core. Push-ups target the chest, shoulders, triceps and core while planks work to strengthen and stabilize muscles in your abdomen, back, chest and arms. Finally, jumping jacks are a great way to increase your heart rate and add an aerobic component to your workout. These are also great ways to exercise when you are on vacation or traveling and don't have access to your regular equipment.

Another alternative to the treadmill is to take a break from hardcore workouts and just increase your NEAT instead. NEAT stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, a term referring to all activities that increase your metabolism. This can include anything from taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking around while talking on the phone or even just fidgeting! Treadmill Desks

Treadmill desks are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to the traditional treadmill. Not only do treadmill desks provide a great workout, but they also allow people to stay productive while exercising.
